I’m so happy to hear that the post was helpful! YNAB is a different philosophy and way of thinking, so after you sign up I highly recommend that you sign up for a few of the beginner classes. The classes are included with your subscription, and they offer them numerous times throughout the day.

I think you will enjoy it!

Ryan

Comment on Budgeting – how I divide my expenses by Mara https://blog.ryanhlaw.com/budgeting-expenses/#comment-673 Sun, 23 Dec 2018 01:54:34 +0000 http://blog.ryanhlaw.com/?p=455#comment-673 Thank you so very much! I have been looking, researching, downloading and trying different budgeting software apps–with a lot of frustration! I will try YNAB since you did the comparison between Mint, EveryDollar, and YNAB. I am also so glad you mentioned and explained how you consider how to cover annual expenses into the budget.
My motivation has been ignited! hahaha!
Thanks again,
Mara

I wonder how they can realisitcally put an emergency fund into place.

Or maybe it never changes in that mindset haha and I’m just a young’un who feels he’s different.

There was a neat article i found a while back that said.
1) use a File Shredding program (there’s a free one windows makes) that shreds pictures, photos, etc into random 0110100 cominations
2) use an erasing program (also a free one windows makes) to erase all your blank data (erased data isn’t gone, so this turns all the blank or unused data on the computer into garbage 0101010110’s also)
3) factory reset the computer in the BIOS (restart and hold f8, google it)
4) if you wanna be more secure, take the harddrive and drill a couple of holes in it, or smash it with a hammer.

5) unless you did number 4, you can probably give it away or sell it to a recycling company for $20 or whatever you were going to do before.

It’s simple – you just make a calendar with all your known, but irregular expenses with a dollar amount attached, divide by 12 and save that much per month. I call this my Revolving Savings account. For more information see this post: http://blog.ryanhlaw.com/revolving-savings/ […]

That was actually a huge selling point for me since I do not want any third party to have my bank logon credentials.”

Comment on Budgeting Software by Wealth Psychology https://blog.ryanhlaw.com/budgeting-software/#comment-655 Fri, 03 Mar 2017 21:10:02 +0000 http://blog.ryanhlaw.com/?p=440#comment-655 This matches my personal experiences with Mint and YNAB pretty closely! I really, really tried to use Mint for a couple months because it’s free (I like free). In the end not being able to easily use custom categories and the non-stop ads put me over the edge. Maybe I’m too lazy but I felt like I was spending a lot of extra time on that stuff. I don’t even recommend Mint anymore when people ask me.
